How to Measure Your Wall for a Wallpaper Mural

Misty Forest Hilltop Castle Red Birds Wallpaper Mural 9

A custom mural is printed to the exact size you enter, so a few careful measurements decide how good the finished wall looks. This guide shows how to measure any wall in ten minutes, what to do with windows, sloped ceilings and stair walls, and how much extra to allow.

What You Need

  • A steel tape measure (fabric tapes stretch)
  • A pencil and paper, or your phone notes
  • A small step ladder for tall walls
  • A level, if the ceiling or floor looks uneven

Step 1: Measure the Width

Measure the wall from corner to corner at three heights: near the ceiling, in the middle and just above the skirting board. Old walls are rarely perfectly square, and the numbers often differ by a few millimeters. Write down the largest of the three.

Step 2: Measure the Height

Measure from the ceiling (or crown molding) down to the top of the skirting board at the left edge, the center and the right edge. Again, use the largest value. If you want the mural to run behind a removable skirting board, measure all the way to the floor.

Inches or centimeters?

Both work. On every product page you can choose inch or cm before entering width and height, so there is no need to convert.

Step 3: Add a Small Margin

Add 2 inches (5 cm) to both the width and the height. This extra edge is trimmed off with a sharp blade after installation and covers small irregularities in corners and ceilings. Without it, a slightly crooked wall can leave a visible gap.

Windows, Doors and Sockets

Do not subtract windows or doors. Measure the full wall as if they were not there. The mural is applied over the whole area and the opening is cut out afterwards, which keeps the design continuous around the frame. Sockets and switches are handled the same way: switch off the power, remove the cover plate, apply the panel and cut a small cross over the opening.

Sloped Ceilings and Stair Walls

For an attic wall or a wall beside a staircase, measure the tallest point and the full width, then treat the wall as a rectangle. Send us a quick photo on WhatsApp with your measurements and our design team will check that the important part of the image (a castle, a mountain peak, an animal) lands on the visible area rather than in the trimmed corner.

Several Walls in One Room

If the mural wraps around a corner, measure each wall separately and add the widths together. Mention this in your order note so we can plan where the design turns the corner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra should I add when measuring for a wallpaper mural?

Add about 2 inches (5 cm) to both the width and the height. The extra edge is trimmed after installation and hides small irregularities in corners, ceilings and floors.

Should I subtract windows and doors from my measurements?

No. Measure the full wall as if the openings were not there. The mural is applied across the whole wall and the openings are cut out afterwards, which keeps the design continuous.

Can I enter my wall size in centimeters?

Yes. Every product page lets you choose inches or centimeters before you enter the width and height.

What if my wall is not perfectly straight?

Measure at three points for both width and height and always use the largest value. The added margin covers the difference.
